Paper qualifications are not as important or relevant as work experience in the real world.

We think that having a paper qualification might not be able to help us when we enter society. To us, what matters the most is the work experience. We truly believe that work experience is the more important than qualification.

Having the qualifications does not necessarily mean that you are equipped with the knowledge of the things that you will be doing in your area of specialty. Like what the chinese proverb say, the older the ginger is, the spicier it is.

Morever, having the experience is more useful than having only paper qualifications. Like for example, you might have the perfect answer on how the machine operates and how to operate it, but when it comes to hands-on, you might be confused. Furthermore, someone who has more experience would be more familar with the machine, this is what most of the employers will be looking out for.

Also, having qualifications means that you have met certain criteria and have the basic knowledge, but when it comes to working in the society, things that you have learnt may not be relevant to what you are doing and there maybe more to that of what you know.

On the contary, having qualification would give you a head start in what you are doing. This may enable you to possess the knowledge of what you are doing, unlike those who do not even have the basic knowledge. This helps you to learn and adapt faster at the environment you are working in.

All in all, we feel that although having qualification is important, but with work experience will allow you to survive better in the real world.
Thats all folks!

I agree with the point that work experience counts more important than a paper qualification. Work experience can be somethings more valuable than a paper certificate too. This is because work experience usually come from years of practising and training, this is even more beneficial to their occupations and something more practical when the employer looks for an employee.

In the modern era, whereby education is an important issue as it deems to a path for securing a higher paid job. However, because of its importance, everyone works so hard to earn the paper qualifications, thus, it ends up the number of people having it is abundant. With this abundancy, this paper qualification becomes any kind of plain paper found on the floor. From this, I would say that the significance of this paper certificate has dropped.

Moreover, looking at the number of unemployed graduates in Singapore, it is evident that just by education certificates, it does not guarantee you anything in the future.

However, I would suggest that paper qualification is not totally useless. After all, countries like
Singapore have pumped in so much efforts in the education industry, it definitely has its own benefits for educating people.

Although we said work experience is more valuable, we could not neglect the fact that these paper qualifications are the necessities which employers look for during interview. For example, if you flip through any recruitment advertisements, how many jobs are there stating you do not need any paper qualifications. It seems to be a pass for you to obtain before you can even start applying for the job.

Also, paper qualifications come in handy in the later part of your career path. Coming to promotions, these paper certificates may determine how much do your pay raise. Through my personal experience with my mentors, given both workers need to do the same amount of works, but one of them holds a diploma whereas the other has a degree, the one with a degree will have a higher pay than the other. Although it sounds unfair, this is the reality we are facing in the working industry.

To conclude, I feel that paper qualifications and work experiences should come hand in hand to give you a better career path. With paper qualification, it can at least increase the chances of getting selected for an interview, however, if you are someone with zero working experience or purely good at academic stuffs, it might give you a bad light too. Thus, paper qualification can be served to give you a easier starting path, but the rest would depend on your working performance and experiences in order to increase your own value for the company.

I agree with the point that work qualification is more important than paper qualification. Work qualification is years of practical experience which is what most of the employers look for.

Just like what ‘Fox’ said, ‘For example, you might have the perfect answer on how the machine operates and how to operate it, but when it comes to hands-on, you might be confused.’ Someone who has the practical experience would then definitely come in handy as he knows the machine almost inside-out.

Work experience also allows one to adapt quickly to its working environments as the person might have already gone through changes and has already adapted to it. So, when a problem occurs, he/she can solve it quickly compared to a person with no work experience as he/she doesn’t know the procedures well or doesn’t really know what to do.

However, paper qualification also has its use, like going for an interview. Take for an example, what will make an employer more interested in an interviewee? A diploma or a Masters Degree? Obviously, they will take a look at the interviewee with a Masters Degree first. So, we cannot say that paper qualifications are totally useless as it increases the chances of getting employed, and then can we start having work experience.

In conclusion, I think that both work and paper qualifications are both equally of use. Because if a person does not have paper qualifications, it is hard for him/her to get a job. If a person does not have work qualifications, he may get employed, but employers tend to look for people with practical experience, just like some paper advertisements whereby it states that you need few years of relevant work experience to apply for the job. Thus, both qualifications are equally important, one cannot do without the other.
